Daniel Herwartz, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany
Biography
Daniel Herwartz is a Professor of Sedimentary Geochemistry at the Institute of Geosciences at the Ruhr-University Bochum since 2024. He started his scientific career at the University of Bonn, where he studied eclogites and fossil bones before obtaining his PhD in 2011. In the following years he worked at the Universities of Göttingen (2011-2013) and Cologne (2013-2023) as research assistant and later as Heisenberg Fellow mostly exploring applications of triple-oxygen isotopes as a tool in a variety of research fields ranging from cosmochemistry, to paleo-environments. His current work focusses on chemical sediments (carbonates, phosphates, sulfates, cherts) partly financed by his ERC Consolidator Grant “KinO”.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
Geochemists are continually working to deepen the scientific foundation needed to understand the complexity of the Earth system and to address today’s global challenges. However, much of our research is highly specialized, which makes communication difficult, even within our own community. The EAG plays a vital role in bridging these gaps by providing a platform for connection, collaboration, and exchange across the broader Earth science disciplines and beyond. If elected, I will work to further enhance interdisciplinary communication and networking, with a particular focus on supporting early-career researchers in finding inspiration and opportunity.
