The EAG Council is made of Officer Councillors and Councillors.

The Officer Councillors have specific duties given in the by-laws.
The President is appointed for a two year term immediately following his or her term as Vice-President, and again serves a two year term as Past-President immediately following his or her term as President. The Councillors serve for three years, participate in council discussions, decisions, initiatives and serve the various committees.

The Councillors are directly elected by the EAG members and the Officer Councillors are elected by the council. Up to two Councillors can be appointed by the Council in connection with specific activities. See past council elections webpage.

Dan Frost

EAG President

Dan Frost is Professor for Experimental Geosciences at the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics, (Bayerisches Geoinstitut), University of Bayreuth, Germany. His research focuses on chemical and physical processes occurring in the deep interior of the Earth. Using mainly experimental methods he studies, for example, the cycling of volatile elements inside the Earth and mineral physical properties of the mantle. He uses these properties to interpret observations of the deep mantle made by seismologists. In recent years he has also used experimental techniques to place constraints on the processes of terrestrial accretion and core formation and the evolution of the redox state of the Earth’s interior.

Dan received his PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Bristol and came to the Bayerisches Geoinstitut in 1997 after a two year post doc at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Intuition of Washington, USA. He was elected by the EAG Council at the end of 2018 to serve as Goldschmidt Officer and co-chair for the Goldschmit2021 Organising and Science Committees, and was an EAG council member from 2009 to 2014. He served as the Chair of the Executive Committee for Elements Magazine from 2015 until 2021, where he also represents the EAG.

Caroline Peacock

EAG Vice-President

Caroline Peacock is Professor of Biogeochemistry in the School of Earth and Environment at University of Leeds, UK. Her work uses fundamental chemical principles to understand the cycling of elements that are essential for life. She focuses on how mineralogical processes help control the abundance and distribution of elements in terrestrial and marine environments, and how small-scale interactions at the mineral-water interface shape global-scale element cycles in both modern and ancient environments. Her work has three overarching strands: mineralogical controls on bio-essential metal cycling, mineralogical controls on bio-essential carbon cycling, and how these mineralogical processes combine to shape the past, present and future Earth system.

Caroline obtained her Ph.D. in geochemistry at University of Bristol, UK, before joining University of Southampton and then University of Leeds. She received the EAG Houtermans award in 2015 for exceptional contributions to geochemistry, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2018, and served as Mineralogical Society of America Distinguished Lecturer in 2018-19 and Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland Distinguished Lecturer in 2019-21. She has previously served the EAG and Geochemical Society in various capacities, including as an EAG Councillor and Awards Nomination Committee Member and Chair.

Catherine Chauvel

EAG Past-President

Catherine Chauvel is a CNRS Directrice de Recherche at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, France. Her research focusses on high temperature geochemistry with special emphasis on mantle geochemistry. She uses trace element and radiogenic isotopes to understand the source of magmas, the evolution of the mantle and continental crust over Earth history and the impact of geochemical fractionation during sediment formation on the overall budget of subduction zones. Her present research concentrates on the origin of magmas formed deep in the mantle and on the origin of the material constituting their mantle source.

Catherine Chauvel obtained her PhD in geochemistry at the University of Rennes, France. She has previously served as treasurer of the European Association of Geochemistry, board member of the Geochemical Society and president of the VGP section of the AGU. She is presently member of the advisory board of Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research and editor of a volume of the next Treatise of Geochemistry. In the past, she has been member of the editorial board of Chemical Geology, editor in chief of Chemical Geology and associate editor of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. She also serves in various committees evaluating research in international organisations or foreign universities.

Martin Whitehouse

EAG Goldschmidt Officer

Martin Whitehouse is a professor at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. He obtained his D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in 1987 and followed this with postdoctoral positions at USGS, Menlo Park, Ca. and the University of Oslo, returning to a research position in Oxford in 1990. Since arriving at the museum in 1996, he has developed and applied high-spatial resolution methods with large-geometry secondary ion mass spectrometry and has directed the NordSIMS facility since 2000. His primary research interest is in the application of radiogenic isotopes and geochronology to the evolution of the Earth’s earliest continental crust. In addition to crustal evolution, his research encompasses studies of planetary evolution, Gondwanan tectonics, the behaviour of geochronometers during metamorphism, and early Earth surface environments and biogenicity. He is currently chair of the IUGS Precryogenian Stratigraphy sub-commission and an associate editor of Precambrian Research.

As Goldschmidt Officer, Martin co-chairs the Goldschmidt2025 Organizing and Science Committees.

Laurent Remusat

EAG Goldschmidt Officer

Laurent Remusat is a senior scientist at CNRS, working at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, France. His research focuses on the light element geochemistry in extraterrestrial objects, with a focus on organic matter. He has developed a strong experiencein organic geochemistry and in the measurements of H, C and N isotopes. He is also internationally recognized for his expertise in the micrometer scale investigation of geological samples using the NanoSIMS.

As Goldschmidt Officer, Laurent will co-chair the Goldschmidt2027 Organizing and Science Committees.

Lenny Winkel

EAG Goldschmidt Officer

Lenny Winkel is a professor of Inorganic Environmental Geochemistry at ETH Zurich and Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology. She is also a member of the Eawag directorate. Lenny is an expert in the field of biogeochemical trace element cycling. She and her team combine field work and chemical analyses with various modeling approaches to advance understanding of trace element distributions in the environment and to predict how these are affected by environmental and climate change. Using geospatial modelling approaches, she worked on broad-scale predictions of the harmful element arsenic in groundwater. In 2011, Lenny received a Swiss National Science Foundation Professorship for her project on the global biogeochemical cycle of the essential trace element selenium. For advancing the understanding of this cycle, including quantification of environmental species, predicting selenium concentrations in global soils and creating the first atmospheric model for selenium, she received the 2022 Science Innovation Award (Heinz Lowenstam medal) from EAG. Finally, she is an engaged speaker: she was the EAG Distinguished Lecturer for 2017 and gave keynote and plenary lectures at various international conferences.

As Goldschmidt Officer, Lenny will co-chair the Goldschmidt2027 Organizing and Science Committees.

Béatrice Luais

EAG Treasurer

Béatrice Luais is a CNRS research scientist at the Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG), Nancy (France). She is an isotope geochemist with particular emphasis on non-conventional heavy stable isotopes.

She obtained her PhD from the University of Montpellier (France) on the topic of subduction-related volcanism. She then joined the Open University (UK) as a post-doctoral researcher where she studied processes involved in the formation of the Archaean crust, before integrating the CNRS at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS, France). She developed isotopic measurements using MC-ICP-MS techniques that she applied to radiogenic isotopes on high-pressure metamorphic crust and high-resolution magmatism, and to non-conventional heavy stable isotopes in the fields of meteorites, deep Earth and critical metal deposits.

She is currently leading a research group focused on the cosmo-geochemistry of germanium and its isotopes to understand thermodynamic conditions of core-mantle segregation, volatile element behaviour during planetary mantle evolution, and processes related to impacts.

Monika Kusiak

EAG Secretary

Monika Agnieszka Kusiak is a professor at the Department of Polar and Marine Research at the Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences and head of the ‘Geoprocessing Belsk Laboratory, GeoBeLa.’ Her research focuses on the application of isotope geochemistry, mainly U-Th-Pb, to understand the evolution of the Earth's oldest rocks, which are mostly found in present-day polar regions. Her particular interests lie in the processes of the ‘young’ Earth during its early formation stage. She has participated in 12 polar expeditions: to Antarctica, Greenland, Labrador, and Svalbard. As a fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Foundation for Polish Science, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, she has conducted research in Japan, Australia, Sweden and Germany. As a receiver of the Fulbright Senior Award, she started her adventure at NASA to work on martian and lunar samples. She is a member of editorial board of the Precambrian Research. For recognition of her science, she received the Bronze Cross of Merit.

Pallavi Anand

EAG Councillor

Pallavi Anand is a Professor of Ocean Biogeochemistry and Palaeoclimatology at the Open University (UK). She received her PhD in biogeochemistry in 2002 from the University of Cambridge (UK) followed by postdoctoral positions at University of Cambridge (UK), Vrije Universiteit (the Netherlands) and the Open University (UK) where she was appointed as a Lecturer. Her research interests span across disciplines including development and application of biogeochemical tools (trace elements and stable and radiogenic isotopes) in palaeoclimate reconstructions, ecosystem conservation and diversity and inclusion. She has served as editorial board member of Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology and as panel member of the UK Research and Innovation funding councils.

Baptiste Debret

EAG Early Career Councillor

Baptiste Debret is a permanent researcher employed by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and working at the Université de Paris Cité - Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). His research is highly multidisciplinary and spans the fields of geology, metamorphic petrology and novel stable isotope geochemistry. He studies natural samples collected at mid-oceanic ridges (e.g., Rainbow hydrothermal site), subduction (e.g., Mariana forearc) and collision zones (Alpine and Himalayan mountain ranges) to track redox transfers associated with (de)serpentinization reactions.

Baptiste Debret completed his PhD in metamorphic petrology at the Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans (France) in 2013. Subsequently, he held a postdoctoral research associate position in England, first at Durham University and then at the University of Cambridge, until April 2017. He then moved to the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) to take up a 3-year fellowship postdoctoral position funded by the “Fond National de la Recherche Scientifique” until October 2019, when he took up his current position at the French CNRS.

Julie Prytulak

EAG Councillor

Julie Prytulak is an isotope geochemist who started her career in Canada, obtaining an undergraduate degree from Carleton University. She then undertook a Masters degree at Washington State University, USA, followed by a PhD at the University of Bristol, UK. She held postdoctoral fellowships at Oxford University and Imperial College London, and joined Imperial as permanent staff in 2011. Julie moved to Durham University in 2018, where she is now a Professor of Geochemistry. Her research applies both stable and radiogenic isotopes to wide ranging topics in Earth Science; she received the 2017 EAG Houtermans award for exceptional contributions to geochemistry. Her current interests focus on applications of metal stable isotopes ranging from element cycling at subduction zones to tracking anthropogenic inputs through the surface environment.

Paolo Sossi

EAG Councillor

Paolo is currently Assistant Professor for Experimental Planetology at ETH Zürich. His research interests lie in understanding the formation and evolution of terrestrial planets. He combines experimental, isotopic, spectroscopic and theoretical approaches to examine the chemical and physical properties of minerals, melts and gases, in order to shed light on the growth and evolution of planets from dust grains into complex bodies. Paolo obtained his Ph.D. in 2015 from the Australian National University, before undertaking a four-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris. He joined ETH in 2019 as an SNSF Ambizione Fellow, and, in 2022, was awarded an ERC Starting Grant and an SNSF Eccellenza Professorship. In 2021, Paolo received the EAG Houtermans Medal for early career contributions to geochemistry.

Bruno Dhuime

EAG Councillor

Bruno Dhuime is a CNRS Research Director at the Geosciences Montpellier laboratory. He is a high-temperature isotope geochemist interested in the formation and evolution of the continental crust. After completing his PhD in 2007, he joined the Bristol Isotope Group where he spent nine fantastic years, as a NERC PDRA, then as a NERC Research Fellow of the University of St Andrews, and finally as a NERC independent Research Fellow. In 2016 he was recruited as a CNRS researcher to work in the 'Lithosphere Dynamics' group in Montpellier, which he currently leads. His current research focuses on the onset of plate tectonics, through the development of new geochemical proxies to constrain changes in the composition, thickness and volume of the continental crust through time.

Carla Tiraboschi

EAG Councillor

Carla Tiraboschi is currently Assistant Professor in experimental petrology at the University of Perugia (Italy). She obtained her PhD in 2015 at the University of Milan (Italy), after joining the University of Milan-Bicocca she eventually moved to the University of Münster (Germany) from 2018 to 2024. Her primary area of research focuses on volatiles such as H2O and CO2, and their effect on upper mantle dynamics. She has used a variety of experimental approaches, from piston cylinders to hydrothermal diamond anvil cells, to characterize high-pressure fluids and melts, and to assess their ability to mobilize elements at depth. She has developed new experimental and analytical strategies to investigate fluid-saturated systems which she combines with thermodynamic modeling of fluid-rock interaction.

Aurélie Verney-Carron

EAG Councillor

Aurélie Verney-Carron is Professor at Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), where she teaches geology and conducts research at Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Systèmes Atmosphériques (LISA). She obtained a PhD in geosciences in 2008 on the study of Roman archaeological glass to better understand the long-term alteration of nuclear waste storage glass. She was then a postdoctoral researcher at the CRPG at Nancy, working on Li isotopes as tracers of silicate weathering. She was then recruited in 2010 at UPEC.
Her research focuses on the application of geochemical methods (characterisation, laboratory experiments, isotope tracers, models, etc.) to heritage objects (stained glass windows, limestone) in order not only to understand their weathering mechanisms and determine the associated kinetics with a view to better preserving them, but also to use them as archives of ancient environmental conditions, especially air pollution.

Márta Berkesi

EAG Councillor

Márta Berkesi obtained her PhD from Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary) in 2011, but her doctoral research was partly conducted at the GeoRessources Laboratory (Nancy, France). She did postdoctoral research in Nancy in 2012, then she returned to Hungary. She is currently a senior research fellow at the HUN-REN Institute for Earth Physics and Space Science. Her research focuses on deep lithosphere fluids and mantle degassing. Her research on fluid inclusion studies focuses on the better understanding of mantle fluids and mantle metasomatism, characterizing fluids associated with carbonatites, and characterizing complex multiphase HP-HT metamorphic fluids. She led (as PI) research group on the application of 3D Raman spectroscopy to refine the above types of fluid systems. At her current workplace, she leads a research group that uses an interdisciplinary (geophysical, geochemical, and volcanological) approach to explore the degassing processes of the mantle and lower crust.

Celia Dalou

EAG Councillor

Celia Dalou is a CNRS researcher in experimental petrology at the Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG, CNRS) in Nancy, France. Her research focuses on the partitioning and isotopic fractionation of volatile elements (H, C, N, S) during melting, degassing, evaporation, and metal–silicate segregation. By bridging experimental petrology, geochemistry, and planetary science, her work advances understanding of the role of volatiles in Earth’s chemical evolution, planetary differentiation, and the origin of planetary volatile inventories. She earned her PhD in 2011 at the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and by a position as research associate at the University of Minnesota. She joined the CRPG in 2017, where she is now a permanent CNRS researcher.

Eva Stüeken

EAG Councillor

Eva is a Reader (Associate Professor) in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, UK. She obtained her PhD in Earth Sciences and Astrobiology at the University of Washington, Seattle, before joining the University of California Riverside as a NASA postdoctoral fellow. Her research focuses on the origin an early evolution of life on Earth and implications for constraining the habitability of other worlds. She uses a combination of field work, laboratory experiments, geochemical analyses and models to develop biosignatures and reconstruct biogeochemical cycles through Earth history.
