Catherine Hirst, Durham University, UK
Biography
Cat is a geologist and geochemist. In 2018, Cat obtained a PhD in Geochemistry from Stockholm University. During this PhD, she used isotopes and microscopy to decipher the source of mineral-organic carbon interactions in a large Arctic river. Between 2018 and 2022, Cat conducted a postdoc at UCLouvain, Belgium where she investigated how permafrost thaw modulates mineral-organic carbon interactions in soils and their fate in rivers. Today, Cat is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University, UK. Here, the team pairs inorganic and organic geochemical tools to understand how minerals may modulate carbon cycling in soils and rivers. She values and fosters a welcoming and accepting workplace.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
If I am elected as an EAG councillor, I would 1. encourage workshops where geochemists and other scientists can meet, learn and help each other to address key scientific challenges. 2. encourage initiatives to share the diverse and exciting subject of geochemistry with all young people. 3. encourage initiatives to help early-career researchers to navigate and benefit from conferences in a way that is best for them. 4. encourage initiatives that share and support the different pathways available to work with geochemistry skills.
