Paolo Sossi, ETH Zürich, Switzerland
Biography
Paolo is currently Assistant Professor for Experimental Planetology at ETH Zürich. His research interests lie in understanding the formation and evolution of terrestrial planets. He combines experimental, isotopic, spectroscopic and theoretical approaches to examine the chemical and physical properties of minerals, melts and gases, in order to shed light on the growth and evolution of planets from dust grains into complex bodies. Paolo obtained his Ph.D. in 2015 from the Australian National University, before undertaking a four-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris. He joined ETH in 2019 as an SNSF Ambizione Fellow, and, in 2022, was awarded an ERC Starting Grant and an SNSF Eccellenza Professorship. In 2021, Paolo received the EAG Houtermans Medal for early career contributions to geochemistry.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
A tree is only as healthy as the roots that nourish it. My hope is that, by engaging in meaningful and sustained interaction with the wider geochemical community, we can create stronger roots. In practice, this involves providing equal opportunities and clear pathways for young researchers; not only in access to laboratory and teaching resources, but also in a better understanding of the research landscape and opportunities for growth. If elected, I would organise tutorials on topics such as grant writing, coding, seminars, and the peer review process, with a view to improving the skills and employability of young, European researchers (including Ph.D. students). I hope that my experience across numerous countries and disciplines can foster interdisciplinary research links, whilst building upon the culture of sharing that underpins our community.
