Raúl Fonseca, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany
Biography
Raúl Fonseca is a Professor of Experimental Petrology and Geochemistry in the Institute of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics at the Ruhr-University Bochum. He obtained a PhD in Experimental Petrochemistry from the Australian National University (Australia) in 2007 and worked as an Assistant Professor in Petrology at the University of Bonn (Germany, from 2007 to 2017), and was a Heisenberg Fellow at the University of Köln between 2018 and 2019. He is an Experimental Petrologist investigating trace element and stable isotope behaviour during high-temperature processes occurring in the interior of terrestrial planets.
His current work focuses on the effect that changing redox conditions have on stable Ti isotope fractionation during planetary differentiation events.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
Geochemistry, like many other Earth Science disciplines and beyond, loses talented young scientists every year who are increasingly frustrated by poor job security, uncertainty, and in many cases, lack of representation. If elected I hope to work with my colleagues to find ways to tackle these issues head on and work towards creating a thriving geochemical community that serves as an example to follow. Geochemistry is one of the most versatile disciplines in Earth Sciences, and this should be reflected in a diverse community that has the instruments to address the many challenges we face. The EAG is a perfect platform in which to address these problems and enact meaningful change, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to serve as EAG Councillor.
