Raúl Fonseca, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany
Biography
Raúl Fonseca is a Professor of Experimental Petrology and Geochemistry in the Institute of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics at the Ruhr-University Bochum. He obtained a PhD in Experimental Petrochemistry from the Australian National University (Australia) in 2007 and worked as an Assistant Professor in Petrology at the University of Bonn (Germany, from 2007 to 2017), and was a Heisenberg Fellow at the University of Köln between 2018 and 2019. He is an Experimental Petrologist investigating trace element and stable isotope behaviour during high-temperature processes occurring in the interior of terrestrial planets.
His current work focuses on the effect that changing redox conditions have on stable Ti isotope fractionation during planetary differentiation events.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
Having only recently been fortunate to get a permanent academic position, I am keenly aware of the challenges that young scientists face in succeeding in modern academia. Poor job security, representation, and diversity are issues that, despite seeing some improvement in recent years, still need to be addressed. Plenty of work still needs to be done to offer avenues for skilled young scientist from diverse backgrounds to succeed, and I would relish the opportunity to help my colleagues. As such, I am honoured for the chance to serve in the EAG council and represent Geochemists in Europe and abroad, and help my colleagues address these issues head on.
