Nominations for the 2027 H.C. Urey Award
Changes to nominations for the H.C. Urey Award
With the goal of increasing the number of nominations as well as the diversity of nominees, starting in 2025, the EAG Council has decided to establish a new nomination process for the H.C. Urey Award.
The main changes are:
- There are no more nomination letters nor support letters.
- All information about the candidate should be directly entered in the new nomination form. This nomination form should be filled by the nominator and should be co-signed by one supporter/endorser maximum.
- In the nomination form, there are two main sections for the award requirements:
(1) Evidence for impact on research and innovation in geochemistry (max 1000 words)
(2) Evidence for impact on the broader community (max 1000 words) - Self-nominations are now possible, however, they should be submitted earlier, by 30 June 2026. See details in the section “Are self-nominations possible?” below.
Please note that these changes currently only apply to the H.C. Urey Award.
Who may submit a nomination?
Anyone may submit a nomination for the EAG H.C. Urey Award except for the members of the H.C. Urey Award Committee and of the EAG Council. They may not nominate a candidate directly nor write a support letter, but they may actively solicit nominations from others.
Are self-nominations possible?
It is possible to self-nominate for the H.C. Urey Award. Please follow the nomination requirements (see below).
Submission deadline: submit your self-nomination by 30 June.
If you do not have a supporter for your nomination by 30 June, you may still submit your nomination.
Following submission, the Award Nominations Committee will review your nomination and assess whether it is competitive. You will be notified by 10 September.
- If the committee considers that your nomination is competitive and if you do not yet have a supporter, you will then have until 30 October to identify one (the committee may provide some suggestions).
- If the committee considers that your nomination is competitive and you already have a supporter, you have nothing else to do, your nomination will be reviewed by the selection committee.
- If the committee considers that your nomination is not competitive, it will not be reviewed by the selection committee. You may however revise your nomination and resubmit it the following year.
Who may be nominated?
The H.C. Urey Award is bestowed annually by the EAG for outstanding contributions advancing geochemistry over a career. The award is based on scientific excellence as well as the broader impacts candidates have made in their careers to date.
Nominations of underrepresented groups are encouraged.
Any scientist may be nominated except for:
- the current members of the EAG Council
- the current members of the Urey Award Committee
- past recipients of the Goldschmidt Award, except for work done since the Goldschmidt Award was presented
- past recipients of the Urey Award
Nominee-nominator conflict of interest
We do not exclude mentors or mentees (e.g., supervisor-student, post-doctoral employer-employee relationships) from making nominations.
We also do not exclude collaborators or members of the same institution as nominators or supporters of a nomination. If this relationship has been formed or maintained in the past 5 years, this should be acknowledged and outlined in the nomination form (in the section Nominator’s Information, part ‘Connection with nominee’) but will not affect the eligibility of the nomination.
What are the nomination requirements?
All nominations must include:
- The nomination form (Word document): download the form here
- A brief CV for the candidate – up to 4 pages
- A listing of the candidate’s selected publications – up to 20 selected publications
These documents should be assembled in a PDF file (documents should be in the order listed above).
Any nomination which goes over the set limits (number of words on the form, number of pages for the CV or number of selected publications) will not be eligible.
Professional Ethics Disclosure
When submitting a nomination, the principal nominator is asked to check one of the following:
1. I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, the person I have nominated has not been sanctioned or found at fault as the result of a complaint, investigation, or other proceeding related to his/her professional conduct (including harassment allegations), and that he/she is not currently the subject of such an investigation.
2. I am aware that the person I have nominated has been sanctioned or found at fault as the result of a complaint, investigation, or other proceeding related to his/her professional conduct, or that he/she is currently the subject of such an investigation, but would nevertheless like to proceed with the nomination.
Please note that selecting the second case is not necessarily disqualifying, but you may be contacted by a member of the EAG Executive or Ethics Committee for a confidential discussion.
What is the nomination deadline?
The nomination must be received by 30 October 2026 for the 2027 H.C. Urey Award.
Once submitted, nominations are held for three award cycles (e.g. 2027-2029). If the nominee becomes ineligible during this period, the nomination will be removed from those being considered. Nominators may update their packages every year to keep them current.
