Nominations for the 2027 Geochemistry Fellows

Who may submit a nomination?

Anyone may submit a nomination for the EAG/GS honorary title of Geochemistry Fellow except for the members of the Fellows Award Committee, the EAG Council and the GS Board. They may not nominate a candidate directly nor write a support letter, but they may actively solicit nominations from others.

Who may be nominated?

The honorary title of Geochemistry Fellow is bestowed upon outstanding scientists who have, over some years, made a major contribution to the field of geochemistry. The award is based on scientific excellence as well as the broader impacts candidates have made in their careers to date.
Nominations of underrepresented groups are encouraged.

Any scientist may be nominated except for:

the current members of the EAG Council
the current members of the GS Board
the current members of the Fellows Award Committee
past Geochemistry Fellows

We do not exclude mentors or mentees (e.g., supervisor-student, post-doctoral employer-employee relationship) from making nominations. We also do not exclude collaborators or members of the same institution as writers of nominator or support letters. We do regard such nominations as a potential conflict of interest if the relationship has been in the past 3 years. Such potential conflict of interest should be acknowledged and communicated to the selection committee as part of the nomination (in the nomination letter), but do not disqualify the individual from participating.

What are the nomination requirements?

All nominations must include:

1. A completed cover sheet; download the form as Word document

2. The principal nominator’s letter (up to 2 pages), including a discussion of the nominee’s major contributions to the field of geochemistry (this letter may be cosigned by up to 3 additional people)

3. One letter of support, written by a different person (up to 2 pages), focusing on the nominee’s contributions that create a dynamic environment essential for scientific progress, such as:

– improvements to infrastructure and techniques
– capacity building-especially in developing countries or emerging disciplines
– curation of sample collections and databases
– exceptional editorial contributions
– communication to the general public or policy makers
– training the next generation of geochemists
– advancing ethics, inclusiveness, and social justice in science

4. A brief (up to 4 pages) CV for the candidate

5. A listing of the candidate’s selected publications (up to 20 selected publications)

Professional Ethics Disclosure

When submitting a nomination, the principal nominator is asked to check one of the following:

1. I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, the person I have nominated has not been sanctioned or found at fault as the result of a complaint, investigation, or other proceeding related to his/her professional conduct (including harassment allegations), and that he/she is not currently the subject of such an investigation.

2. I am aware that the person I have nominated has been sanctioned or found at fault as the result of a complaint, investigation, or other proceeding related to his/her professional conduct, or that he/she is currently the subject of such an investigation, but would nevertheless like to proceed with the nomination.

Please note that selecting the second case is not necessarily disqualifying, but you may be contacted by a member of the EAG or GS Executive or Ethics Committee for a confidential discussion.

What is the nomination deadline?

The nomination must be received by 30 October 2026 for the 2027 Geochemistry Fellows Award.
Once submitted, nominations are held for three award cycles (e.g. 2027-2029). If the nominee becomes ineligible during this period, the nomination will be removed from those being considered. Nominators may update their packages every year to keep them current.

One letter of support (up to 2 pages), written by a different person, focusing on the nominee’s contributions that create a dynamic environment essential for scientific progress
A CV of the candidate (up to 4 pages)
A listing of the candidate’s selected publications (up to 20 selected publications)

These documents should be assembled in a PDF file (documents should be in the order listed above).

Scientific excellence is a core value of both the Geochemical Society and European Association of Geochemistry, and it is our privilege, by rewarding it, to take a leading role in its definition. In awarding Geochemistry Fellows, our societies believe it is important to recognize the broad spectrum of scientific achievements that advance geochemistry. Excellence should not be limited to major discoveries and ideas that change paradigms, and not solely evaluated on the basis of the number of papers published in high-impact journals; the nominee's h-index and previously obtained distinctions; nor the amount of funding acquired. Instead, we recognize that scientific eminence, achievement and impact also encompass sustained and proven contributions that create a dynamic environment essential for scientific progress. Examples of these include:

improvements to infrastructure and techniques;
capacity building, especially in developing countries or emerging disciplines;
exceptional editorial contributions;
curation of sample collections and databases of long-term scientific significance;
communication of the intrinsic excitement of our field to the general public;
work with policy makers to ensure that their decisions are grounded in rigorous science;
training the next generation of geochemists; and advancing ethics, inclusiveness, and social justice in science.

By recognizing the full diversity of the geochemical community and its many varied contributions we hope to provide a wide range of examples that young scientists can strive to emulate.
