Call for session & workshop proposals closes 15 October
The Goldschmidt science program is built by contributions from the geochemistry community, so we invite you all to propose sessions and workshops for the Goldschmidt 2027 conference. There are 12 themes to which sessions can be proposed, more info and guidelines are available on the conference website.
In case you missed them or want to watch again the Goldschmidt 2026 Awards and Plenary Lectures are available on the Goldschmidt conference YouTube channel.
The EAG is looking for enthusiastic and motivated volunteers for the following committees in 2027: Communications, Council Nominations, DEI, Training & Outreach, Award Nominations, and Geochemistry Fellows Nominations. Anyone working in geochemistry is eligible to apply.
In the latest EAG Reactions webinar Emil De Borger (NIOZ) and Caroline Slomp (Radboud University) explored how coastal ecosystems are under growing pressure from human activity. In case you missed it you can watch the recording.
Organising a short course or conference in Europe in 2027? Apply for Sponsorship by 1 November
The EAG Short Course and Conference Sponsorship Program, provides up to 3,000 Euros to support EAG members who are organising geochemistry-related short courses or small conferences in Europe. The primary goal of this funding is to directly support student attendance at these events. One or several events may be sponsored each year.
Building the Hard Rocky Planets summer school report by EAG sponsored student Vaishvi Tyagi
My name is Vaishvi Tyagi, and I am a PhD student in the Experimental Petrology group at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford. The intersection of planetary science and experimental geochemistry greatly fascinates me...
Deep winter dissolved organic carbon transfer from taliks in permafrost landscapes
In permafrost landscapes, taliks (unfrozen ground zones) represent year round hydrological pathways that can transfer dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to streams during winter. When laterally connected...
Boron isotopes in Archean-Proterozoic marine deposits trace continental emergence
We present a novel approach to trace continental emergence by reconstructing the oceanic boron isotope composition from marine deposits (chert, iron formations and shales). Boron enrichment in continental...
Fluid-present melting of early Archean crust: Stable Sr isotopes from the Kaapvaal Craton
Stable Sr isotopes (δ88Sr) provide a process specific tracer of plagioclase behaviour in magmatic systems. Because plagioclase liquidus is sensitive to the water content of melt, δ88Sr can be applied as a tool to...
Fe-H melting curve below 3 GPa: implications for hydrogen in the lunar core
It has been assumed that hydrogen is negligibly incorporated into core forming metals below ∼3 GPa, and therefore the presence of hydrogen in iron cores of small terrestrial bodies the moon has not been...
China’s Chang’e-6 samples hold a pure form of iron never before found in lunar samples
[Earth.com] Chang'e-6 soil from the Moon's far side holds pure γ-Fe, a form of iron never seen in lunar samples, and it can keep a magnetic record. Li Long and his colleagues at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science were looking at specks of glass...
Snowball Earth's iron deposits may have formed through microbes living without sunlight
[Phys.org] Iron is one of the most abundant metals on Earth's surface, yet how such massive iron ore deposits formed throughout geological history has long remained a mystery. The prevailing theory has been that ancient photosynthetic...
When will the AMOC collapse? We don’t know, but should still prepare
[New Scientist] Uncertainty about when or even if the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, a vital ocean current, might collapse has been an excuse to ignore the risk, but that actually makes it even more important that we act now...
The internal chemistry of phytoplankton changes as oceans become more acidic
[Phys.org] Our oceans are becoming more acidic, which could have major consequences for marine life. Of particular concern is what this could mean for phytoplankton, the microscopic photosynthetic organisms that form the basis of marine food webs and produce roughly half of the oxygen on Earth...
Anak Krakatau eruption reveals a hidden danger high in the atmosphere
[Earth.com] Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency reveals something ordinary satellite pictures cannot show: what is happening inside a volcanic plume. When Anak Krakatau erupted in Indonesia in early September, ESA’s...
From 2-6 November in Hannover, Germany, global experts will gather to address multidisciplinary breakthroughs on: pPore-scale fluid-rock interaction; reactive transport modelling; mineral carbonation in mafic/ultramafic rocks; geochemical controls on natural hydrogen preservation and migration; and much more..
Mineralogical Society awards nomination deadline: 16 April 2027
The Mineralogical Society of UK and Ireland now awards four medals: the Neumann Medal for mid-career scientists, the Collins Medal for senior scientists; the Guppy Award for Technicians; the Max Hey medal for early career scientists.
The deadline for nominations (including self-nominations) is 16April 2027 but please act now & nominate a deserving colleague.
