2026 Award nominations now open

Nominations for the 2026 Awards are open until 30 October. There have been some changes to the nomination process and guidelines, explained below.

The H.C. Urey Award recognizes scientists who have made outstanding contributions advancing geochemistry over a career. Significant changes were made to the nomination process; in particular, there are no more nomination letters.

The Science Innovation Award recognizes scientists who have recently made a particularly important and innovative breakthrough in geochemistry. There are new eligibility criteria: nominees must have received a recognized doctorate within 25 years of the first day of the year in which the award is given (career breaks are taken into account).

The F.G. Houtermans Award recognizes exceptional contributions to geochemistry by an early career scientist. There are new eligibility criteria: nominees must have received a recognized doctorate within 7 years of the first day of the year in which the award is given (career breaks are taken into account).

The Geochemistry Fellowship honors outstanding scientists who have made major contributions to the field of geochemistry. The award is based on scientific excellence as well as the broader impacts candidates have made in their careers to date.

Resolving the chlorine isotope composition of Earth’s depleted mantle

The chlorine isotope ratio (δ37Cl value) of Earth’s mantle has implications for volatile exchange between Earth’s surface and mantle, as well as for the source of volatile delivery to Earth. However, there is...

Deformation modulates helium diffusion behaviour in apatite

Utilising the apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronometer to infer the thermal histories of geologic materials requires understanding the factors that influence helium diffusion kinetics. Here, we demonstrate that...

Scientists use cosmic dust to reconstruct Earth's atmospheric history

[Phys.org] Since the beginning of Earth's history, tiny particles of rock and metal from space have been hitting our planet. On clear nights, we can even see their traces as shooting stars. Trapped in layers of rock, these micrometeorites can remain preserved for billions of years...

A Bermuda stalagmite reveals how the Gulf Stream shifted – and what it might do as the climate changes further

[The Conversation] Beneath the subtropical paradise, Bermuda hosts a vast network of caves which contains records of Earth’s climate history. Inside are mineral deposits called speleothems – including stalagmites on the cave floors more than six-foot tall. These grow slowly as water drips down from the cave ceiling...
