Large Cu endowment in the Tibetan Plateau as a result of dual stage mantle fertilisation
The Himalayan-Tibetan orogenic belt hosts numerous world class porphyry copper deposits (PCDs), whose metal sources are controversial. Mercury isotopes display mass independent fractionation during...
Origins of the pervasive luminescence in modern stromatolites
Stromatolites are emblematic geobiological objects in the search for signatures of life. Their biogenicity has usually been assessed based on their macroscopic morphology, texture and/or the presence of microfossils...
Igneous rocks as a viable source of fixed nitrogen to the prebiotic world
Pseudomorphism, a prominent feature of many fluid-driven mineral transformations, happens when a secondary phase inherits the morphology of the primary one due to a tight coupling between primary phases dissolution...
Hg isotopes constrain metallogenic effects of the Wilson Cycle of the Paleo-Asian Ocean
The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) hosts a variety of hydrothermal mineralised systems that formed during the opening, development and closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. Mercury is an important ore-forming metal...
The Strongest Solar Storm in History Impacted Earth 14,300 Years Ago
[Discovermagazine] Solar storms batter Earth every year, creating the occasional aurora and sometimes even paralyzing power grids. But these common phenomena pale in comparison to a monstrous event that inundated the planet with particles...
Our acidifying oceans. How the ‘evil twin’ of the climate crisis is threatening our oceans
[The Guardian] In seas around the world pH levels are falling – and scientists are increasingly frustrated that the problem is not being taken seriously enough. Read more: ‘Ticking timebomb’: sea acidity has reached critical levels, threatening entire eco...
An Alaskan volcano could help scientists understand why 'stealthy' volcanoes erupt without warning
[Phys.org] When volcanoes are preparing to erupt, scientists rely on typical signs to warn people living nearby: deformation of the ground and earthquakes, caused by underground chambers filling up with magma and volcanic gas. But some volcanoes...
‘This is ground zero for Blatten’: the tiny Swiss village engulfed by a mountain
[The Guardian] For weeks the weight had sat above the village, nine million tonnes of rock precariously resting on an ancient slab of ice. A chunk of the Kleines Nesthorn mountain’s peak had crumbled, and its rubble hung over the silent, empty...
