New in Geochemical Perspectives

Geology, Policy and Wine – The Intersection of Science and Life, by Lawrence D. Meinert

This is a somewhat unusual Geochemical Perspectives issue in that it covers a broad range of academic, governmental, policy, wine, and celestial activities touched on during a 40 year career. From personal experience, Larry Meinert recounts his academic development, work in the US Congress, management of the energy and mineral resource functions of the US Geological Survey, helping to shape high level governmental policy, exploring resource issues beyond Earth to the Moon, Mars, and Asteroids, and last but not least the making of fine wine.

Society News

New EAG Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group

With renewed and reinvigorated national and global condemnation of a multitude of injustices, many societies and organizations are issuing statements to affirm their commitments to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and to end racism, discrimination and violence against Blacks and other minority groups the world over. See EAG Statement Condemning Racism.

But we know that more needs to be done. For this purpose an EAG Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group is being formed, to promote and improve DEI at all levels of EAG's actions and activities, as well as within the broader geochemistry community. Members of the community who wish to join the Working Group are invited to contact us at office@eag.eu.com with a brief description of their motivation for getting involved.

New on the EAG website: online community events

The virtual age has opened up new ways for special interest groups, small organisations and institutes to reach the wider community by hosting online webinars, discussion forums, and coffee mornings that are free-to-register and open to geochemists across the world. To complement our established conference and short course calendar, we have created a new event listings page on the EAG website, specially devoted to upcoming or regular online community events: http://eag.eu.com/events/online-community-events/.

If you are organising an event that you would like to promote on the new online community event webpage, please send the details of the event to office@eag.eu.com.

The Value of Field Training in Geochemistry

[By Martha Papadopoulou] Field work is a key part of training for many geological careers. From locating and describing new deposits to excavating rocks and fossils, to identifying structural relationships between different geological units, fieldwork is essential for geologists to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the geological problems they are studying. But what about for geochemists, whose work is often...

Hafnium isotopes in zircons document the gradual onset of mobile-lid tectonics

The tectonic regime of the early Earth has proven enigmatic due to a scarcity of preserved continental crust, yet how early continents were generated is key to deciphering Earth’s evolution. Here we show that a compilation of data...

Moderately volatile element behaviour at high temperature determined from nuclear detonation

The first nuclear detonation, at the Trinity test site, is an analogue for high temperature volatile loss during planet formation processes. We report Cu isotope and abundance data, comparing them with Zn and K isotopes in trinitite glasses...

Project seeks super view of Earth's mantle

[BBC] Some of the most sophisticated models of the Earth's interior ever constructed will be produced in a new project led from Cardiff University. Researchers want to simulate the behaviour of the mantle. This solid rock layer, which resides between the planet's core and crust, moves very....

Deep-sea mining may damage underwater ecosystems for decades

[ScienceNews] Microbe communities living in the seafloor off Peru haven’t bounced back from a deep-sea mining experiment 26 years ago. The populations are still reduced by 30 percent in this part of the South Pacific Ocean, researchers report April 29 in Science Advances. From 1989...

Lockdowns trigger dramatic fall in global carbon emissions

[The Guardian] Carbon dioxide emissions have fallen dramatically since lockdowns were imposed around the world due to the coronavirus crisis, research has shown. Daily emissions of the greenhouse gas plunged 17% by early April compared with 2019 levels, according to the first...

Asteroid, climate change not responsible for mass extinction 215 million years ago

[Phys.org] A team of University of Rhode Island scientists and statisticians conducted a sophisticated quantitative analysis of a mass extinction that occurred 215 million years ago and found that the cause of the extinction was not an asteroid or climate change, as had previously been...

Terrawatch: could granite solve the hard problem of nuclear waste storage?

[The Guardian] We need to find somewhere safe to dispose of high-level nuclear waste; a place where we can be confident it will be isolated and contained for hundreds of thousands of years. And if we want to keep a lid on global warming then we may well need to find a similar place to store...

When it rains, lava pours

[Nature News and Views] The most recent eruption of Kīlauea volcano on the island of Hawaii began in 1983. For 35 years, most of its magma emerged from a set of fissures in the volcano called the upper east rift zone. But on 3 May 2018, Kīlauea’s lower east rift zone opened up, giving way to...

The Coast of Antarctica is Starting to Turn Green

[Universe Today] The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost part of Antarctica, and has the mildest climate on the continent. In January, the warmest part of the year, the temperature averages 1 to 2 °C (34 to 36 °F). And it’s getting warmer. Those warm temperatures allow snow algae to...
