Geochemistry making the news

Mine deep under Ontario holds billion-year-old water

Mine deep under Ontario holds billion-year-old water

An article published by Greg Holland (Lancaster, UK) last week in Nature found particular resonance with the press. We are pleased to note the role as co-author by both Chris Ballentine, EAG President, and Barbara Sherwood Lollar, Geochemical Society Vice-President. Their research suggests that brine containing high levels of hydrogen and methane from an Ontario mine is at least 1.5 billion years old. A google of 'ancient Canadian water' shows the huge public interest (including the BBC, NPR and CBC) in the relevance of this work for understanding life in isolation and extreme environments both on Earth as well as other planets like Mars.

The law of straightness

[By Chris Pearce] In my previous post, ‘A geochemistry ditty’, I penned what is possibly the geekiest poem you will ever come across. I was therefore pleasantly surprised when several people got in touch to say how much they appreciated my artistic license, as they could associate with much of what I’ve been through. This got me thinking… Read more
