Welcome to Goldschmidt2017!

The European Association of Geochemistry and the Geochemical Society are very excited to welcome you to the 27th Goldschmidt Conference in Paris!
Goldschmidt2017 is sure to be as exciting as ever, with 200 sessions across 23 themes playing host to a staggering number of posters and oral presentations, not to mention the wide variety of workshops, field trips, and early career events on the programme.

Registration opens at 15:00 on Sunday 13 August - note no entrance will be possible before then - and the Ice-Breaker starts at 17:00.

You can download the Conference App from the Google Play store and the Apple store.

There are plenty of events throughout the week but these are not to miss:

bulletA lunatic's life: The Isotopic Adventures of G.J. Wasserburg - Wednesday 16 August 17:30-19:00 Rm 252, all are invited to have a drink, relax and share memories of one of the founding fathers of isotope geochemistry. His colleagues will give talks on the way his character and intellect shaped the modern field.

bulletPop-up Talks - Tuesday 15 August 13:00-14:00 Rm 242. Bring along your lunch and enjoy short presentations from some of our students. Sharing their passions and talents this event will give many their first taste of presenting at an international meeting. Do come and encourage them.

bulletGoldschmidt Wild Orbit Cinema - Monday-Friday 12:45-14:15 Rm 243. This year Goldschmidt and Wild Orbit Films are hosting a week-long celebration of the very best science communication. Twenty of the best short science films submitted will receive a lunch time screening throughout the conference. Come and watch them!

Meet the Goldschmidt2017 Bloggers!

Meet the Goldschmidt2017 Bloggers!

This year, we have 7 intrepid bloggers to cover the conference! Meet Deirdre Clark (University of Iceland), Martin Mangler (Imperial College London/Natural History Museum London), Sami Mikhail and Claire Cousins (University of St. Andrews), Clare Stead, Tadhg Dornan and Foteini Drakou (all in Trinity College Dublin) in the first Goldschmidt2017 blog post!

Elements August issue: 'Boron: Light and Lively'

Elements August issue: 'Boron: Light and Lively'

Boron is an essential constituent of nearly 300 minerals in the Earth’s crust and mantle. It provides a unique indicator for deciphering Earth’s 4.6 billion-year evolution from a molten mass in the proto Solar System into a vibrant planet that sustains life. Boron allows scientists to peer into the complex dynamics of subduction zones... Read more

Tracking continental-scale modification of the Earth’s mantle using zircon megacrysts
J. Woodhead, J. Hergt, A. Giuliani, D. Phillips, R. Maas

Metasomatism, the chemical alteration of rocks by a variety of melts and fluids, has formed a key concept in studies of the Earth’s mantle for decades. Metasomatic effects are often inferred to be far-reaching and yet the evidence for their occurrence is usually based upon individual hand specimens or suites of rocks that display considerable heterogeneity. [...]

No direct contribution of recycled crust in Icelandic basalts
S. Lambart

Using Melt-PX to model the decompression melting of a heterogeneous mantle, I investigated the role of major-element composition of the lithologies present in the source on magmatic productivity, and trace element and isotopic melt compositions, independently of the bulk mantle composition. [...]

Microbial nitrogen cycle enhanced by continental input recorded in the Gunflint Formation
A. Ishida, K. Hashizume, T. Kakegawa

Nitrogen isotope compositions of kerogen in the sedimentary rocks from the 1878 Ma Gunflint Formation were analysed to understand the relationships among microbial activities, ocean chemistry, and tectonic evolution in the Animikie Basin. [...]

Super-heatwaves of 55°C to emerge if global warming continues

[Science Daily] A recently published study by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) -- the European Commission's science and knowledge service -- analyses the interaction between humidity and heat. The novelty of this study is that it looks not only at temperature but also relative humidity to estimate the magnitude and impact of heat waves. Read more

Big data points humanity to new minerals, new deposits

[Science Daily] In a paper published by American Mineralogist, scientists report the first application to mineralogy of network theory (best known for analysis of e.g. the spread of disease, terrorist networks, or Facebook connections). The results, they say, pioneer a way to reveal mineral diversity and distribution worldwide... Read more
