Goldschmidt2017: over 4500 abstracts received

With over 4500 abstracts received, the 27th Goldschmidt Conference in Paris (13-18 August) will be the biggest to date and we first want to recognise that this is the achievement of a significant and excellent community engagement. The European Association of Geochemistry and the Geochemical Society, organisers of the Goldschmidt Conferences, sincerely thank all involved.

Early registration deadline is 13 June and EAG members as well as members of all EAG partner societies benefit from reduced rates.

Early Career Scientists at Goldschmidt2017

ECS

Early Career Scientists are at the heart of the Goldschmidt conference, and various programs aimed at young professionals in geochemistry have been developing in recent years. Goldschmidt2017 will continue this trend and introduces new initiatives. Find an overview of the Goldschmidt2017 program for Early Career Scientists. Note that the deadline to register for most events is 13 June.

March for Science on 22 April

March

The March for Science, partnering with over 200 organisations including the European Association of Geochemistry, is coming up on Saturday 22 April. This movement will unite people from all horizons, who support and value scientific research and evidence-based policies. In addition to the March in Washington D.C., there will be numerous satellite marches around the world, including in all major cities of Europe. You can find a March near you and should you wish to march under the EAG banner, we have prepared some vector images, which you can download and print in any desired size.

New Elements issue: Sulfides

New Elements issue: Sulfides

Despite the bulk silicate Earth only containing 250 parts per million of sulfur, sulfide minerals and liquids have a powerful impact on the behavior and fractionation of a wide range of elements in the Earth’s crust and underlying mantle. Read more

EAG members will receive their print copy shortly and have online access to all back issues of Elements (user id = email address, password = EAG membership number). To find your membership number, login to your member area.

Determining subduction-zone fluid composition using a tourmaline mineral probe
V.J. van Hinsberg, G. Franz, B.J. Wood

Subduction zones are the sites where crustal materials are recycled into the mantle. In response to increasing pressures and temperatures during this process, hydrated minerals break down and release solute-bearing fluids and, above ~750 ?C, form hydrous melts. [...]

The cosmic molybdenum-neodymium isotope correlation and the building material of the Earth
J. Render, M. Fischer-Gödde, C. Burkhardt, T. Kleine

The isotopic similarity of enstatite chondrites and Earth has often been cited as evidence that the Earth is made of enstatite chondrite-like material. Here we show, however, that enstatite chondrites have nucleosynthetic molybdenum (Mo) isotope anomalies and, therefore, cannot represent the sole building blocks of the Earth. [...]
