Goldschmidt2017: We look forward to welcoming you

We are so looking forward to welcoming you to this year’s Goldschmidt Conference in the beautiful city of Paris, from 13-18 August. Scientists and students from all over the world will come together to discuss what is new, hot and important in the interdisciplinary field of geochemistry. We will meet to communicate, collaborate, mentor, learn, and enjoy - a fantastic line up of speakers, exhibitors and events in an inspiring environment. This year’s Science Committee, with the help of an engaged international community of geochemists, is proud to present fresh sessions in your 23 favourite themes including the geochemistry of: Planets, Atmospheres, Resources, Impacts, Seas… and more.

Submit your abstract by 1 April. Also apply for grants by 1 April (limited number available).

Goldschmidt Wide Orbit Cinema

Goldschmidt Wide Orbit Cinema

This year, Goldschmidt2017 and Wild Orbit films are hosting a week-long celebration of the very best science communication. Prizes, or Orbits, will be awarded to the best communicators in our science. Goldschmidt Wild Orbit Cinema opens for submissions on 1 March. We looking for the best geochemistry science films made by you, the scientists.

Elements: Volcanoes: From Mantle to Surface

Elements: Volcanoes: From Mantle to Surface

Volcano science is advancing rapidly, and improvements in monitoring tools, petrologic tools, and modeling of volcanic processes have greatly improved our understanding of volcanic behavior. The February 2017 issue, guest edited by Keith D. Purtirka and Kari M. Cooper, brings together contributions exploring volcanic behavior throughout the crustal system.

EAG members will receive their print copy shortly and have online access to all back issues of Elements (user id = email address, password = EAG membership number). To find your membership number, login to your member area.

Repulsion between calcite crystals and grain detachment during water–rock interaction
Y. Levenson, S. Emmanuel

Weathering in carbonate rocks is often thought to be governed by chemical dissolution. However, recent studies have shown that mechanical detachment of tiny grains contributes significantly to the overall surface retreat. [...]

Evidence of sub-arc mantle oxidation by sulphur and carbon
A. Rielli, A.G. Tomkins, O. Nebel, J. Brugger, B. Etschmann, R. Zhong, G.M. Yaxley, D. Paterson

The oxygen fugacity (ƒO2) of the Earth’s mantle at subduction zones exerts a primary control on the genesis of mineral deposits in the overlying magmatic arcs and on speciation of volcanic gases emitted into the atmosphere. [...]
