6 weeks left to propose a session or workshop

In preparation of Goldschmidt2017, the whole geochemistry community is invited to submit suggestions for sessions before 1 November. Please note that any suggested sessions must be broad enough to attract at least 25 abstract submissions.

If you are interested in organising a pre-conference workshop or Town Hall meeting, you are also invited to submit a proposal before 1 November. Find out more.

EAG announces Sigurður Gíslason as the next Vice-President

The EAG Council has recently elected Sigurður Reynir Gíslason as Vice-President, starting in January 2017.
Sigurður (Siggi) Gíslason is a Research Professor at the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland. He is the chairman of CarbFix (carbfix.com), the initiative to store carbon in basaltic rocks. Siggi’s major scientific contributions are: 1) measurement of the chemical and physical erosion rates of basaltic terrains and their role in the global carbon cycle, 2) quantifying the carbon storage potential of basaltic rocks... Nominate deserving colleagues for an award

Nominate deserving colleagues for an award

Recognition of scientific excellence at all stages of one's career is crucial. Should you know of deserving colleagues, nominate them for an EAG Award or GS/EAG Fellowship. Deadline for GS/EAG Fellowship nominations is 31 October. Deadline for EAG Awards is 15 November. We also provide guidance on how to write a nomination and support letter.

bulletUrey Award: recognizes scientific excellence over a career

bulletScience Innovation Award (named after Heinz Lowenstam for his work in biogeochemistry): recognizes scientists within 30 years from the start of PhD

bulletHoutermans Award: recognizes scientists within 12 years from the start of PhD

bulletGS-EAG Geochemical Fellowship: recognizes scientists who have made major contributions to the field of geochemistry

2016 Distinguished Lecture Program

2016 Distinguished Lecture Program

ECS

We are very happy to report that the 2016 Distinguished Lecture Program is now finalised. Prof. Alexandre Anesio, 2016 Distinguished Lecturer, will provide lectures on biogeochemistry in institutions in Ukraine, Romania, Slovenia and Poland from 21 to 28 October.
If you are located in one of these institutions (or a nearby one), you are invited to attend as the lectures are open to all.

EAG and MinSoc renew their partnership

EAG and MinSoc renew their partnership

The European Association of Geochemistry and the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland (MSGBI aka MinSoc) are very pleased to announce the renewal of their partnership, providing benefits to members of both organisations.

EAG members can specifically:

bulletPurchase MSGBI print publications at member rate

bulletPublish open access articles in Mineralogical Magazine and Clay Minerals at member rate

bulletAttend MSGBI meetings at member rate

MSGBI members attending Goldschmidt2017 will be able to register at member rate and will receive a 2-year EAG membership following the conference.

See details of the partnership.

EAG Early Career Ambassador Program: next deadline is 1 October

EAG Early Career Ambassador Program: next deadline is 1 October

ECS

Through the Early Career Science Ambassador Program, early career scientists based in Europe who wish to attend conferences outside Europe (except Goldschmidt) can apply to receive EAG support and have 50% of their expenses covered, up to 2000 Euros. They will be viewed as EAG Ambassadors while attending the event. The next deadline to apply is 1 October.

Tracking the formation of magma oceans in the Solar System using stable magnesium isotopes
M. Schiller, J.A. Dallas, J. Creech, M. Bizzarro, J.A. Baker

The processes associated with magma ocean formation and solidification can control the earliest compositional differentiation and volatile inventory of planetary bodies. Thus, elucidating the scale and extent to which magma oceans existed in the Solar System is critical for a full understanding of planet formation. [...]

Cadmium isotope variations in Neoproterozoic carbonates - A tracer of biologic production?
S.V. Hohl, S.J.G. Galer, A. Gamper, H. Becker

Cadmium concentrations and stable isotopic compositions in seawater are important tools for studying the biogeochemical cycling of Cd in the modern oceans and as a proxy for micronutrient utilisation by phytoplankton. It is now well established that Cd isotopes become “heavier” as the primary production in the surface ocean increases, even though the mechanism driving the isotopic fractionation is still debated. 4th Workshop on Highly Siderophile Element Geochemistry

4th Workshop on Highly Siderophile Element Geochemistry

[By Amy Riches] The 4th International Workshop on Highly Siderophile Element Geochemistry (co-sponsored by EAG) was hosted by Durham University, United Kingdom, from July 11th-14th 2016. This meeting was attended by 75 delegates from all over the globe; and their 73 abstracts offered broad and exciting science for the week... Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology (USSP) in Italy

[By Sophie Gangl] The 13th Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology (USSP) was held at the University of Urbino (Italy) in July 2016 (www.urbinossp.it). USSP focuses on past climate dynamics with special emphasis on the analysis of the long-term carbon cycling and its implications in the understanding of present and future climates. Read more

EU Announces that all scientific articles should be freely...

[Futurism] EU Announces That All Scientific Articles Should Be Freely Accessible by 2020. This week was a revolutionary week in the sciences—not because we discovered a new fundamental particle or had a new breakthrough in quantum computing—but because some of the most prominent world leaders announced an initiative which asserts that European scientific papers should be made freely available to all by 2020. Life on Earth may have sprung from a planetary collision...

[Science Alert] Life on Earth may have sprung from a planetary collision 4.4 billion years ago. Researchers think that such a planetary smash-up could explain how carbon – which is necessary for carbon-based life forms like us to exist – came to be on the planet's mantle and surface, solving a long-standing evolutionary mystery. Lightning strikes: Thunderstorms spread mercury pollution

[Science Daily] In the southern United States, an afternoon thunderstorm is part of a regular summer day. But new research shows those storms might be doing more than bringing some scary thunder and lightning. In fact, these storms are moving significant amounts of mercury to the ground. Read more

Mars contamination fear could divert Curiosity rover

[Nature News] Four years into its travels across Mars, NASA’s Curiosity rover faces an unexpected challenge: wending its way safely among dozens of dark streaks that could indicate water seeping from the red planet’s hillsides. Although scientists might love to investigate the streaks at close range, strict international rules prohibit Curiosity from touching... Read more
