Goldschmidt2016

Early registration deadline: 26 April

Early registration deadline: 26 April

We would like to remind EAG members that they can register at member rate for Goldschmidt2016 (¥67000/~€530 and ¥40000/~€315 for students). Members can find their EAG membership number in their member login.

An exciting range of 16 workshops and 13 field trips is proposed before and after the conference so consider registering for those before 26 May. Also a very diverse social program will be taking place during the conference, including a dinner cruise, typical Japanese performances and the traditional banquet.

ECS

Finally, the Goldschmidt conference has a long history of supporting and encouraging younger scientists through several Early Career Events, including special workshops, 'Meet the plenary' and the Mentoring Program. Mentees will be matched one-on-one (where possible) with an experienced scientist to help them navigate the conference. We would ask all senior scientists attending to consider signing up for this program as part of registration. Find out more

New resource for Early Career Scientists

ECS

We would like to announce the launch of a new database on the EAG website which serves as a resource for geochemistry related bachelor, master, and PhD programs, as well as short courses and small bursaries for early career scientists. If you wish to add any information to this database, please email the EAG Office at office@eag.eu.com.

EAG at EGU General Assembly 2016

If you are going to EGU 2016 (Vienna, 17-22 April), note EAG co-organises several geochemistry related sessions:

  • GMPV1.2: The noble gases as geochemical tracers – in celebration of Pete Burnard
  • GMPV1.3: Experimental Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry and Volcanology
  • BG1.2: Application of stable isotopes in Biogeosciences
  • EOS20: Promoting and supporting equality of opportunities in geosciences

EAG will also welcome delegates at its booth (no 54 in the Entrance Hall) where you can find out more about our society, pick up free goodies, purchase back issues of Geochemical Perspectives or Elements, sign up for membership etc.

Mars TGO mission heads for Red Planet on methane quest

[BBC News] Europe and Russia have launched a joint mission to the Red Planet. The satellite, called the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), lifted off from Baikonur in Kazakhstan at 09:31 GMT. The probe will investigate whether the methane in the world's atmosphere is coming from a geological source or is being produced by microbes. Read more

[Science] How a melting ice sheet could actually lower sea level in some places | The Greenland ice sheet is melting. If you live in nearby Norway, how worried should you be about that sudden influx of water flooding your house? It turns out, not nearly as worried as you should be if you live in Chile. Read more

Major source of methanol in the ocean identified

[Science Daily] As one of the most abundant organic compounds on the planet, methanol occurs naturally in the environment as plants release it as they grow and decompose. It is also found in the ocean, where it is a welcome food source for ravenous microbes that feast on it for energy and growth. Read more
