Distinguished Lecture Tour: videos now available

Prof. Miryam Bar-Matthews, Geological Survey of Israel, was this year's EAG Distinguished Lecturer and presented several lectures on speleothems in Croatia, Hungary and Ukraine. Videos of the following lectures are now available:

  • Speleothems as paleoclimate indicators
  • Novel techniques in speleothems research for paleohydrological studies
  • Water availability in Middle East and North Africa and the connection to human dispersal: insights from speleothems research

EAG co-organises sessions at EGU General Assembly 2016

EAG co-organises sessions at EGU General Assembly 2016

The aim of the EAG is to promote geochemistry as widely as possible. For 2016 we are happy and proud to co-organise several geochemical sessions at the EGU General Assembly 2016 (Vienna, 17-22 April). We invite you to submit your abstract to one of the EAG co-organised sessions highlighted below. Note the abstract deadline is 13 January and submission information can be found via the link for each session:

  • GMPV1.2: The noble gases as geochemical tracers – in celebration of Pete Burnard
  • GMPV1.3: Experimental Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry and Volcanology
  • GMPV2.1: Volatile cycles in the Earth's mantle
  • GMPV2.2: Earth's chemical and redox differentiation: perspectives from metamorphism
  • BG1.2: Application of stable isotopes in Biogeosciences
  • EOS20: Promoting and supporting equality of opportunities in geosciences

EAG endeavours to offer a comprehensive set of membership benefits, including reduced rates at Goldschmidt conferences, print and online issues of Elements, Geochemical Perspectives, Geochemical Perspectives Letters, student sponsorship and much more. Rates are unchanged for 2016: 25 Euros for professionals or 100 Euros for 5 years | 15 Euros for students or 35 Euros for 3 years. Find out more or join.

Geochemistry Photo Contest: a few days left to vote

Geochemistry Photo Contest: a few days left to vote

The jury has now selected the best 5 photos in each theme and we now invite you to vote for your favourite photos before 21 December. The winner of each theme will receive a 5-year EAG membership and will see their photo on the banner of this newsletter and on the EAG website.

Elements: Geomicrobiology and Microbial Geochemistry

Elements: Geomicrobiology and Microbial Geochemistry

Microbes exert significant geochemical and mineralogical control on local environments through their metabolic and growth needs. In turn, local geochemical conditions dictate what metabolic processes are possible. This thematic issue is focused on the interface between the Earth, environmental systems, and microbial life. The latest discoveries, theories, “omic” methods, and emerging frontiers in the area of geomicrobiology and microbial geochemistry are discussed.

EAG members will receive their print copy shortly and have online access to all back issues of Elements (user id = email address, password = EAG membership number). To verify your postal address or your membership number, login to your member area.

Watch: Mount Etna erupts with spectacular natural fireworks

[Science Alert] Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna, has erupted in spectacular fashion, filling the sky above Sicily with flame, lightning, and a gigantic ash cloud. Mount Etna has been mostly quiet for two years, but after intensifying volcanic activity in recent weeks, things came to a head with the dramatic eruption you can see in the video. Watch the video
