Goldschmidt2015: one month to go

Goldschmidt2015: one month to go

As Goldschmidt2015 preparations are being finalised, we would like to remind you of a few points:

  • The pre-registration deadline is 16 July. Members of EAG, GS, GSJ, MSGBI, DMG, AFEQ, SFIS, SGI, SIMP, HGS and ISEB are entitled to reduced registration rates (€590 and €395 for students).
  • Numerous student events have been organised, such as the Lunchtime Seminar Program or Meet the Plenary series of lunches. We would like to thank all the societies or companies which support these initiatives.
  • In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Goldschmidt conference, we have organized a series of 25 anniversary talks, one representing each theme. Each will be presented by a renowned expert, and provide both an overview of the advances over the past 25 years as well as some personal insights into the future of each theme.
  • Finally, it is still possible to purchase banquet tickets (€50 / €35 for students). With a fine dining menu (vegetarian option available) and unlimited drinks, dancing till the small hours in beautiful surroundings of Prague's Municipal House, the Conference Banquet will be a night to remember.

Earth’s core contains 90% of Earth’s sulphur

Earth’s core contains 90% of Earth’s sulphur

[European Association of Geochemistry] So perhaps there is some truth in the old legends of the underworld reeking of brimstone (or sulphur, as it is now called)? New research confirms that the Earth’s core does in fact contain vast amounts of sulphur, estimated to be up to 8.5 x 1018 tonnes. This is about 10 times the amount of sulphur in the rest of the Earth, based on the most recent estimates (and for comparison, around 10% of the total mass of the Moon). Read more

Earth's colossal crater count complete

[ScienceMag] Mars is pocked with more than 300,000 craters, created by asteroid impacts. The moon is blanketed with millions more, too many to count. But the surface of Earth, constantly eroded by wind and rain, hides its history. Read more

Iron: A biological element?

Iron: A biological element?

[Science Daily] Think of an object made of iron: An I-beam, a car frame, a nail. Now imagine that half of the iron in that object owes its existence to bacteria living two and a half billion years ago. Read more

Severe weather linked more strongly to global warming

Severe weather linked more strongly to global warming

[Nature] Attempts to attribute extreme weather events to global warming have often failed because they have looked at the wrong thing, leading climatologists claim. By focusing on rising temperatures, tides and atmospheric moisture instead of chaotic and highly variable shifts in atmospheric circulation, they say, scientists may be able to better identify the human fingerprint... Huge study links wastewater injection wells to earthquakes

[Science] Before 2008, Oklahoma experienced roughly one noticeable earthquake per year. By 2014, that number had soared to almost one a day, and the state is not alone. Scientists have documented an astronomical rise in seismic activity across the central and eastern United States... Read more
