A regal banquet to remember

A regal banquet to remember

With a fine dining menu (vegetarian option available) and copious drinks, dancing till the small hours in beautiful surroundings, the Conference Banquet will be a night to remember. As in 2011 it will be held in Prague's Municipal House, one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau structures in Europe. We have booked only the most suitable rooms at the venue (elegant first floor, Smetana Hall and stunning French Restaurant, not the basement bars) which means places are limited.

Banquet

Tickets are €50 / €35 for students. You can purchase your ticket with your registration, or if you have already registered, add it to your account (see instructions here).

4 new destinations for the Distinguished Lecture Tour 2015

We are excited to announce that this October, EAG Distinguished Lecturer Prof. Miryam Bar-Matthews (Geological Survey of Israel) will be giving lectures on speleothems in Kiev (Ukraine), Budapest (Hungary), Postojna (Slovenia) and Zadar (Croatia). Through the EAG Distinguished Lecture Program, we aim to introduce and motivate scientists located in under-represented regions to emerging research areas in geochemistry.

Elements June issue: Apatite: A Mineral for All Seasons

Elements June issue: Apatite: A Mineral for All Seasons

Apatite is recognized to be the most common phosphate mineral in the Earth’s crust and lithospheric mantle where it subsequently acts as a major reservoir for P, F, Cl, OH, CO2, and many trace elements including the rare earth elements. This issue introduces apatite as a ubiquitous accessory mineral, which is also related to a supergroup family of over 40 other minerals. Read more

EAG members will receive their print copy shortly and have online access to all issues of Elements (user id = email address, password = EAG membership number). To verify your postal address or your membership number, login to your member area.

 Impressions from InterPore 2015

Impressions from InterPore 2015

[By Reza Gooya] The 7th international conference on porous media and its applications was held by Interpore society on 18-21 May in Padua, Italy. Interpore was founded in 2008 as a non-profit independent scientific organization, with the aim of advancing knowledge for understanding, describing, and modeling natural and industrial porous media. Scary: Sending Alpine ice to Antarctica

Scary: Sending Alpine ice to Antarctica

[BBC News] Scientists are planning to ship ice to the Antarctic. They're afraid that mountain glaciers around the world are melting as a result of climate change and want to store samples of ice in a new vault in the coldest place on Earth. Read more

New evidence emerges on the origins of life

[Science Daily] In the beginning, there were simple chemicals. And they produced amino acids that eventually became the proteins necessary to create single cells. And the single cells became plants and animals. Recent research is revealing... Read more

Ocean Acidification, Global Warming’s ‘Evil Twin’

[EarthZine] On a bitterly cold February morning in 1972, a young graduate student at Texas A&M University boarded the research vessel Alaminos in Galveston, Texas, and headed out into the Gulf of Mexico. It was Richard Feely’s first time at sea. Read more

Earth organisms survive under low-pressure Martian conditions

[Science Daily] Methanogens, microorganisms in the domain Archaea, use hydrogen as their energy source and carbon dioxide as their carbon source, to metabolize and produce methane, also known as natural gas. Methanogens live in swamps and marshes... Read more

Pluto's Moons Are Even Weirder Than Thought

Pluto's Moons Are Even Weirder Than Thought

[Space.com] Pluto's moons are even stranger and more intriguing than scientists imagined, a new study reveals. The Pluto system consists of four tiny satellites — Nix, Hydra, Kerberos and Styx — orbiting a "binary planet" comprised of Pluto and its largest moon Charon, which, at 750 miles (1,207 kilometers) in diameter, is nearly half as wide as the dwarf planet itself.
