Welcome to Goldschmidt2014

Welcome to Goldschmidt2014

The Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry are excited to welcome you to the 24th Goldschmidt conference. The Californian Goldschmidt will open on Sunday with its traditional Icebreaker Welcome Reception at 17:00 in Hall A/B of the Sacramento Congress Centre. Registration will open from 15:00 on Sunday.

On a practical note, the conference app, including the program, your personal program, local information and maps, is available for download: iTunes App Store, Android App, all other versions. The WiFi login in the congress centre is "goldschmidt" and the password is "sacramento".

EAG Cocktail Party at Goldschmidt2014

During the conference, EAG will be happy to welcome you at booth 51 and tell you more about our society. Note that any delegate becoming a member during the conference will receive all back issues of the publication Geochemical Perspectives.

In addition, EAG will hold its traditional Cocktail Party / General Assembly on Tuesday 10 June at 18:30 in Lecture Room D, open to all delegates. It is an opportunity to find out more about EAG’s activities and initiatives while enjoying a drink.

Union Session - Elements: 10 years old

Union Session - Elements: 10 years old

The Goldschmidt Conference will feature a two-day union session entitled “Elements: 10 Years Old” on Monday and Tuesday, June 9 and 10. This session will cover the three fields reflected by the magazine over its 10 years of activity: geochemistry, mineralogy, and petrology and will also include contributions dedicated to societal/cultural aspects. The talks will illustrate the great diversity of topics treated over the years and will emphasize major progress made since the publication of some of the early themes. This will be done in the philosophy of the magazine, that is, by combining cutting-edge research with accessibility to a non-specialist audience. This session will also be a unique occasion for delegates to discuss expectations concerning the magazine with the editorial team. The talks (19 of which are keynote lectures) will all be 30 minutes long. Check the exciting line-up.

EAG supports Earth Science Europe

EAG supports Earth Science Europe

ESE is a grass roots initiative to define the vision and infrastructure needs for solid-Earth science in Europe and provide a voice for the community. This month sees the launch of the ESE brochure to provide a high-level vision for ESE aimed at policy makers, funders, industry and the public.

Society synergy

Society synergy

EAG is excited to report signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Società Geologica Italiana (SGI). SGI members now enjoy the same terms and conditions for organizing society events and registering at European Goldschmidt conferences as EAG members. On registering for European Goldschmidts, SGI members will also be given complimentary EAG membership. EAG members in turn now receive price reductions on SGI print publications (see details). We hope both societies’ members will find this mutual extension of society benefits useful.

EAG Student Sponsorship Program

EAG Student Sponsorship Program

As EAG aims to support students training in geochemistry, on years when the Goldschmidt conference is not in Europe (i.e. on even years), EAG will sponsor 20 students up to 200 Euros per student, to attend short courses, summer schools, workshops or conferences located in Europe and related to geochemistry. See more information and application deadlines.

EAG Photo Contest: a chance to win a 5-year EAG membership

We would like to remind you that submission for the EAG Photo Contest is open until 15 June. The contest is open to everyone and participants can submit one photo per theme:

  • The changing world: geochemistry in action (including photos of Goldschmidt2014 conference and field trips)
  • Geochemistry and life
  • Geochemistry in a test tube

The winners of each theme will receive a 5-year EAG membership, which includes member rates for the Goldschmidt conferences until 2019, subscription to Geochemical Perspectives and Elements Magazine and much more (see membership benefits for details). Study shows iron from melting ice sheets may help buffer global warming [EAG Press Release - 21 May 2014]

A newly-discovered source of oceanic bioavailable iron could have a major impact our understanding of marine food chains and global warming. A UK team has discovered that summer meltwaters from ice sheets are rich in iron, which will have important implications on phytoplankton growth. The findings are reported in the journal Nature Communications on 21st May, 2014. Read more

Planetary materials and Astrobiology

[By Graciela Matrajt] Have you ever heard of rocks falling from the sky? Rocks that come from space? Those rocks are known as meteorites and they belong to a class of materials called planetary materials. In this class of materials we can also find very small pieces of dust, also coming from space, and known as cosmic or... Read more

Biosignatures Across Space and Time

[By Elizabeth Swanner] Last week, the clouds cleared and nearly 100 scientists from six continents descended on rainy Bergen, Norway to share their perspective on the broad topic of life in the universe. The 2014 joint meeting of the Nordic Network of Astrobiology and the Centre of Geobiology was hosted by the University of Bergen. The science sessions... Read more
