Philip Pogge von Strandmann, University College London and Birkbeck, University of London

Biography

Philip Pogge von Strandmann is a Reader in Isotope Geochemistry jointly at University College London and Birkbeck, University of London. He studied Earth Sciences at Oxford University between 1999 and 2003, and obtained a PhD from the Open University in 2006. He then spent five years as a post-doc at Bristol University, before moving back to Oxford as a NERC Advanced Research Fellow in 2011. He moved to London in 2013. He studies the Earth’s present and past biogeochemical cycles, focusing mainly on chemical weathering, but also aspects like nutrient cycling and palaeo-redox. His methods largely involve measuring novel isotope ratios, particularly light metal isotopes, in palaeo- and modern geological samples, and well as experimental samples.

Motivation for serving the EAG council

As I have (very) gradually become a more established academic, I’ve increasingly realised how important the community is. The EAG fosters collaboration through conferences, rewards excellence and also importantly helps promote the careers of new academics. Without these aspects, geochemistry would be a much less rewarding field to work in. I currently serve on the council of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and consider that being on the EAG council would further my contribution to geochemistry.
