Attila Demény, Hungarian Academy of Sciences
Biography
Attila Demény is the director of the Institute for Geological and Geochemical Research of the Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences (Budapest, Hungary, governmental institute network from 2019). He graduated as a geologist in 1986 at the Eötvös Loránd University and obtained his PhD in 1994 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He started his research carrier with geochemical studies on high-pressure metamorphic rocks and continued with stable isotope geochemistry of fluids of mantle-derived igneous rocks. Later he was involved in projects on major extinction events, that directed his interest to combined application of trace element and stable isotope geochemistry in paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate research. In the last decade he is focussing on speleothems, and especially on paleoclimate reconstructions using stable isotope analyses of carbonates and inclusion-hosted water.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
I felt very honored to learn about my nomination for the EAG Council membership. As a geochemist, participating in the council of such a top scientific organization is a great feeling and I will do my best to represent my scientific field and the region of Central and Eastern Europe. I would like to contribute to the appearance of geochemical applications in paleoclimatological-paleoenvironmental research and to the increasing participance of researchers of the region in the highly prestigious Goldschmidt conferences by spreading information. I would also promote the organization of local workshops within the framework of the European Association of Geochemistry with a special attention to involve young scientists and to explore how the Association can help their carrier in geochemistry.
