Susan Little, University College London, UK
Biography
Susan is a Lecturer and NERC independent research fellow at University College London. She is an isotope geochemist, interested in developing novel tracers of carbon cycling in the past and present ocean. She completed her PhD at the University of Bristol in 2013, in the Bristol Isotope Group, before spending two years at ETH Zürich as a postdoctoral researcher. Since 2015 she has been based in London as a research fellow, first in the MAGIC group at Imperial College London, before moving to UCL in 2019. Her research utilises the isotopes of various bioessential and redox sensitive trace metals (including copper, zinc, cadmium, nickel), unlocking their potential to reconstruct the co-evolution of oxygen and life on Earth.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
Like many geochemists, the Goldschmidt conference has played a major role in my scientific development. At Goldschmidt, all the great strengths of the geochemistry community are on display: ground-breaking science, active social and professional networking, mentoring of the next generation. It’s also at Goldschmidt that some areas of improvement have been laid bare: a lack of diversity in invited speakers, for example, or in award winners. I am very conscious of my own privilege, attending Goldschmidt on so many occasions. If elected to the EAG council at this pivotal time, I will help the society continue its efforts to improve representation, as well as navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by the climate emergency in a post-Covid world.
