Itay Halevy, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel
Biography
Itay Halevy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. His Bachelors degrees in Geology (2004) and Computer Science (2004) are from Ben-Gurion University. He received his PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University (2010), and his postdoctoral training in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at Caltech (2011). Halevy works to develop an understanding of the processes that have governed the biogeochemical and climatic coevolution of surface environments on Earth and Mars. To decipher various geochemical and isotopic signals in sedimentary rocks, and the information they hold on past environments and processes, Halevy employs a combination of experiments, geological and geochemical observations, and theoretical models, on scales ranging from single organisms to global cycles.
Motivation for serving the EAG council
We have all chosen to spend our years of activity and creativity working as (bio)geochemists to discover, to understand, to make a difference. In addition to giving back to a society that is my professional home, my main motivation for serving as EAG councillor is to aid the members of our community in reaching these goals. To achieve this, continuing and extending the excellent work done by the present council and committees, I propose to (i) develop platforms to recognize and promote early-career scientists, (ii) bring together disparate fields, to widen the range of research problems we can address and deepen the insight into problems we are already addressing, (iii) increase the visibility of geochemistry, in the widest and most inclusive sense, to draw new talent and resources into our community.
